What is a bridesmaid? Ever wonder what the history is behind a bridesmaid ? I am sure you will find differing history depending on location, religious beliefs and the wealth of ones family. Today many Brides choose to have bridesmaids because of tradition, and for fun. In Mid-evil times, bridesmaids were responsible for helping with the preparation of the wedding. It was not un-common for bridesmaids to be hired help or enslaved, they did not walk the isle and were rarely even seen. In the very early ages of our country it became a tradition for bridesmaids to dress exactly like the bride because of spiritual superstition. It was thought that if they all dressed exactly like the bride, gown and all, the evil-spirits wouldn't know the bride from the bridesmaids, therefore would be unable to cast spells, harm, kidnap or rob her. While some traditions never change, (the bridesmaids still work their tale off) they are a very important part of the wedding. No longer cast aside and hidden, bridesmaids join the bride in celebrating her new found love. In fact, it is very common for a bride to give a gift of thanks to her bridesmaids, maid of honor and even Mother and Mother’s in-law. Today some traditions stay, while some have been cast out, it really is up to you, the bride.
